McMurdo has won a contract by US Army to provide working prototypes of a custom personnel recovery device (PRD) that will enhance Soldier Search and Rescue Efforts.
As a militarized personal locator beacon (PLB), the PRD will be a component of the Army's Personnel Recovery Support System (PRSS), to alert and notify if a soldier has become isolated, missing, detained or captured, the company announced Tuesday.
Under the contract, McMurdo will deliver a PRD that meets specific requirements established by the Army. The device will be outfitted with a dual-mode capability for training and for providing operational distress signals.
"The Army recognized a need to complement its PRSS with a dual mode, easy-to-use distress beacon to provide initial report/locate functionality, even in remote locations," said Mark Cianciolo, general manager of McMurdo's aerospace, defense and government programs.
