The Pakistan Navy announced on Friday that its third Hangor-class submarine has been launched in China, marking another step in the joint naval shipbuilding program between the two countries.
The launch ceremony took place in Wuhan, Hubei Province, on Thursday and was attended by senior Pakistani naval officials. Vice Admiral Abdul Samad, Pakistan’s Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Project-2, said the submarines’ weaponry and sensors would help maintain regional power balance and strengthen maritime stability.
Pakistan signed an agreement with China for eight Hangor-class submarines, with four to be built in China and the remaining four at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works under a technology transfer program. The first vessel was launched in April 2024, and the second in March 2025.
A statement from the Pakistan Navy said the Hangor-class initiative would add a new dimension to longstanding Pakistan-China defense cooperation.
Chinese military affairs expert Zhang Junshe told the Global Times that the submarine is equipped with advanced sensor systems, stealth features, endurance, mobility and strong firepower. He described it as a strategically important platform and said the cooperation reflects the high level of trust between the two nations.
Jiang Bin, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, reiterated on August 8 that China-Pakistan defense cooperation is aimed at supporting regional security, not targeting any third party. He added that China is ready to share equipment development achievements with friendly countries, including Pakistan.
