China is displaying its newly decommissioned nuclear-powered submarine at the Chinese Navy Museum in Qingdao, a port city in East China's Shandong Province.
The first nuclear-powered submarine was towed to a wharf of the museum on Saturday for public display, China Military Online reports. The submarine was pulled off the service after more than 40 years of military service, according to naval authorities.
The submarine's release from military service and the safe, thorough and reliable handling of the related nuclear waste, a nuclear reactor and other devices showed China's life-cycle maintenance ability, ranging from a nuclear submarine's production, operations and management to disposal, naval authorities said.
In 2013, for the very first time, China released footage of its nuclear submarine fleet taking part in a drill. It was hailed as a symbol of Chinese military development. China said the drill had nothing to do with the current political situation in Northeast and Southeast Asia. It was referring to some concerns in the region.
