South Korea Plans To Sets Up Task Force To Push Major Defense Agreements With US

South Korea plans to set up a task force to help push forward major defense agreements with the new Donald Trump administration in the US.

South Korean authorities would attempt to achieve close cooperation with those lawmakers in Trump’s administration who are responsible for introducing changes in US defense policy with regard to South Korea, Defense Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun was quoted as saying by Sputnik Wednesday.

South Korea intends to develop cooperation with the new US administration and promote major bilateral agreements in the defense sphere, Han said.

The unexpected win of the U.S. presidential election by Republican candidate Donald Trump has increases policy uncertainty for South Korea which needs a strong alliance with Washington more than ever in the face of growing threats from North Korea, Yonhap reported quoting defense experts.

Policymakers and experts here have been concerned about controversial remarks that Trump has made on the campaign trail regarding his policy toward the North, trade with its allies and many other issues.

Trump even went as far as to support South Korea and Japan arming themselves with their own nuclear weapons in case U.S. withdraws its troops there, a stance that is out of line with other mainstream politicians in Washington.
