A Venezuelan police agency's helicopter in charge of criminal investigations has attacked the building housing the country’s Supreme Court.

The Cuerpo de Investigaciones Científicas, Penales y Criminalísticas (CICPC) is the country's largest national police agency, responsible for criminal investigations and forensic services. "The CICPC helicopter attacked the building housing the country’s Supreme Court," the Venezuelan Communication and Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said.

"A person has taken up arms against the republic. He hijacked a helicopter and attacked the Supreme Court," Villegas said, as quoted by the NTN24 television channel.

Villegas added that the CICPC helicopter flew over Venezuela's capital of Caracas calling for unrest.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro labeled the incident as an act of terrorism. “We will catch the helicopter and those who perpetrated the armed terror attack, I condemn it,” Maduro said.

Maduro noted that the helicopter hurled several grenades at the Supreme Court’s building in Caracas. In addition, Maduro called on the opposition coalition Democratic Unity Roundtable to condemn the incident.

Venezuelan Armed Forces are on standby to protect peace, Maduro added.
