Lockheed Martin To Support Restoration Efforts Of US Navy's Damaged Destroyer USS Fitzgerald

The Pentagon has awarded $68 million worth contract to Lockheed Martin to support the restoration of the US Navy’s damaged guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald.

Last June, the USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant ship while transiting busy sea lanes outside Tokyo Bay after the junior officer in charge on the bridge disregarded standard navigational and maneuvering practices. The resulting flooding killed seven sailors in a berthing compartment as they slept. 

The awarded contract also covers the production and delivery of five upgraded AN/SPY-1D(V) phased arrays for the purpose of enhancing in-service ballistic missile defense-capable DDGs, the DOD release states.

Work will be performed in Moorestown, New Jersey; and Clearwater, Florida, and is expected to be completed by June 2021.

Fiscal 2012 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy); fiscal 2017 and 2018 other procurement (Navy); and fiscal 2018 operation and maintenance (Navy) funding in the amount of $68,500,936 will be obligated at time of award, and $10,534,626 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year, the release added.
