Australia is investing up to $2.12 billion to acquire advanced AMRAAM missiles, strengthening the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) air defence and aerial strike capability.

The purchase includes AIM-120D-3 and AIM-120C-8 variants, both designed to engage aerial threats at extended range. The acquisition is being made through the United States Government’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Program.

The AIM-120D-3, a supersonic air-launched missile, will be integrated with the Royal Australian Air Force’s F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and F-35A Lightning II aircraft. It enhances Australia’s capacity to counter threats at long distances.

The AIM-120C-8 variant will be deployed using the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), which is currently being fielded by the Army’s 10th Brigade. This system is designed to engage enemy aircraft and missiles from the ground.

The missile investment aligns with the 2024 National Defence Strategy, which prioritises a strengthened strike capability to deter potential adversaries and support Australia’s strategy of denial.
