Boeing has been awarded $14 million contract for the production of 266 fuse assemblies for US Air Force air launched missiles.

Work is expected to be complete by May 2022, US department of defense said in a statement Thursday.

A safe-and-arm or contact fuse assembly is usually part of the warhead section of a missile. The safe-and-arm/contact fuse assembly ensures the warhead will not explode until after the missile is launched. It is designed to explode the warhead after impacting the target, according to Federation of American Scientists.

The warhead section can be replaced by an exercise section which transmits missile performance data for collection and analysis.
