China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) began a six-day, large-scale, live-fire military drill in an area of the East China Sea on Wednesday, according to a Chinese media.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said that the military has a firm grasp of the activities and was monitoring the Chinese movements closely.
The drill zone spans from sea areas close to east of Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang Province to sea areas east of Wenzhou and in Zhejiang Province.
"The drill's main objective is to send a serious warning to Taiwan separatists forces," Song Zhongping, a military expert was quoted as saying by the Global Times.
If the drill zone were to be pushed forward, it would basically cover the entire island of Taiwan, the expert said. Taiwan in return has responded by inducting Apache Attack helicopters and bolstering its defences to deter a land invasion.
