The US Army has placed an order for additional Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon systems from Saab.

Saab and the US Army have signed a multi-year framework agreement for delivery of the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system, designated M3E1 in the US.

The first delivery order amounts to $9 million with deliveries expected in 2019, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

The M3E1 84-mm recoilless rifle is the latest version of the weapon systems. It reduces the launcher weight from 10 kg to less than 7 kg.In US military service, it is known as the "M3 Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System" (MAAWS) or "Ranger Anti-tank Weapons System" (RAWS).

Features of the Carl-Gustaf M4 include a red-dot sight, a travel safety catch to allow the M4 to be carried while loaded, an adjustable shoulder rest and forward grip for improved ergonomics, a shot counter to keep track of how many rounds have been fired to manage the weapon's 1,000-round barrel life, picatinny rails for grips and sight mounts, and a remote round management function.
