USAF Awards Honeywell $3.52B GPS Inertial Navigation Contract

The US Air Force has awarded Honeywell $3.52 billion for Embedded GPS Inertial Navigation System Modernization (EGI/EGI-M) follow-on production and sustainment.

This contract provides production, sustainment and engineering technical services in support of the EGI/EGI-M system.

The EGI is a small, lightweight navigation and guidance unit that contains precise position service GPS on one standard electronic module, plus a ring laser gyro inertial navigation system. Based on a modular open-systems architecture, the upgraded EGI-M system supports the rapid insertion of new capabilities into military aircraft like the F-22 jet fighter and E-2D carrier-based radar aircraft. EGI-M technology is designed for compatibility with legacy aircraft. It provides information about an aircraft’s altitude, speed, and location to ground stations and to other equipped aircraft in the vicinity.

Work is expected to be completed by December 31, 2035.
