Massive Construction Activity near Sino-Indian Border, Chinese Jets Seen
Massive construction activity has been observed over the past two months at China’s Ngari Gunsa airport, a dual-use military and civilian port, amid escalating Sino-Indian tensions.
The base is located just 200km away from Pangong lake, focal point of skirmishes between the two forces on May 5-6.
Images shared by an open source intelligence expert detresfa_ show extensive infrastructure development at Ngari base between April 6-May 21.
Four Flankers operated by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) can be seen lined-up close to the main tarmac. The jets could be PLAAF’s J-11 and J-16 jets that are derived from Russian Su-27 and Su-30 fighters respectively. The aircraft share the same footprint. According to detresfa_, the jets were first spotted in December last year.
Satellite images released by Planet labs indicate a PLA camp near Hot Springs sector in close proximity to Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Chinese camp lies just 11km north-west of India’s Gogra base.
