Turkey is in talks with the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) for its military to use two bases in the North African country.

“Turkey using al-Watiya ... is on the agenda. It could also be possible for the Misrata naval base to be used by Turkey,” a Turkish source was quoted as saying by several reports on Monday.

Final decision over Turkish military use of these bases has not been taken. A more permanent air and naval presence in Libya could reinforce Ankara’s growing influence in the region, including in Syria, and boost its claims to offshore oil and gas resources.

Last year, GNA agreed to provide Turkey drilling rights near Crete in exchange for their support under a maritime demarcation accord. This has been opposed by Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the European Union.

Turkey has also flagged possible energy and construction deals with Tripoli once the fighting ends.
