BAE Systems Scores US Navy Deal for MK 38 MOD 3 Machine Gun Systems
Mk 38 Mod 3 Machine Gun System

BAE Systems has won a $18.77 million US Navy contract for the production of the MK 38 MOD 3 machine gun system (MGS) and associated spares.

The production of the MGS is derived from the application of an ordnance alteration to the MK 38 MOD 1 25mm MGS.  Once installed, this version will incorporate two-axis stabilizations, an improved electro-optical sight system, improved multi-function display, a modified main control panel, a new main computing unit, a 7.62mm machine gun and remote control operation.

According to the company, the Mk 38 MOD 3’s surveillance system moves separately from the gun system, preventing adversaries from easily knowing they have been detected.

The MGS’s electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor system provides 330-degree surveillance capability and three fields of view. It is integrated with the MOD 3’s fire control system.

The Mk 38 Mod 3 provides a range of 2.5km and selectable rates of fire from single to 180 rounds per minute, and fires all U.S. Navy-approved 25mm ammunition.

Work will be performed in Hafia, Israel (67%); and Louisville, Kentucky (33%). Work is expected to be complete by November 2021.
