Main Issues on Reviving the 2015 Nuclear Deal Settled: Outgoing Iran President Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that progress had made regarding the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal after talks with global powers in Vienna, Austria.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Rouhani said the main issues in the Vienna talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal have been settled. He added that it is now possible to have the sanctions lifted right away, Tasnim News Agency reported today.

Iran's top negotiator and Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi said earlier this month that after 5 rounds of negotiations between Iran and the Group 4+1 (China, Russia, Britain and France plus Germany) in Vienna, 1000 sanctions have been removed but 500 of the most punishing ones still remain.

The U.S. walked out of the Iran nuclear deal during Trump administration but the Biden team is willing to let the remaining of the western powers plus China and Russia to go ahead with the negotiations and find a way out of the largely Iran-U.S. dispute over the former's nuclear program.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or the Iran Nuclear Deal allowed Iran to enrich Uranium only up to 3.67%. To build a nuclear bomb, Uranium enrichment must reach 90%. When Trump pulled U.S. out of the deal, Tehran is said to have breached the threshold by raising the level to 4.5%.

The president also noted that the next administration will have a much easier job in running the country, since his administration has handled the situation under an unprecedented economic war and while facing the problems in the import of medicine and foodstuff.
