Two U.S. Air Force T-38C jet trainers were involved in a fatal accident on Friday that led to the death of one pilot and left two others injured, the service has announced.
"At approximately 10:00 a.m., an aircraft accident involving two aircraft took place on the runway," Laughlin Air Force base posted on its official Twitter account.
One of the injured pilots was treated and released while the other is said to be in a critical condition.
The Air Force has not revealed the cause of the accident. "An investigation into the mishap is still ongoing," a statement by the service read.
The Northrop T-38 Talon is a two-seat, twinjet supersonic jet trainer. It was the world's first supersonic trainer and is also the most produced.
Based on the photos circulated on social media, the accident appears to have occurred in close proximity to a runway at the installation. It may have happened while the two aircraft were about to take off or land.
