Russia Launches Kalibr Missile-Carrying Submarine, 'Ufa'

Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corp., Launched the first of its Project 636.3 third generation diesel submarine Ufa capable of launching the Kalibr land attack cruise missile.

The launch ceremony took place Thursday at the St. Petersburg shipyards. The Project 636.3 are considered quieter than foreign submarines of similar capabilities, a Russian MoD’s TV channel Zvezda said.

“Ufa is a sea hunter. Universal, silent, stealthily reaches the target, can conduct patrols, reconnaissance. And if necessary, with its formidable weapons, it can reliably cover a naval base or port,” the report said.

Project 636.3 vessels belong to the third generation of diesel submarines. They are considered quiet in comparison with foreign counterparts.

The underwater speed of the submarines is 20 knots, the maximum immersion depth is 300m, the autonomy of navigation is 45 days, the crew is 52 people, the underwater displacement is about 4,000 tons. The submarines are carriers of the Caliber-PL cruise missiles.
