Russian Sarmat Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) is more powerful than the U.S.-made Minuteman-III strategic missile, the Director General of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin said.
"This is a missile that is much more powerful than other strategic weapons, including the Minuteman-III missile, which is in service with the United States. Both in terms of global reach and the power of warheads that can be delivered to the territory of an aggressor," Rogozin said in an interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel.
This rocket invulnerable to both existing and future U.S. and NATO missile defense systems. "This is a huge success for our designers and engineers. We are very proud," he added.
Russia successfully conducted the first launch of a Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk Region, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday.
Earlier, Russian President Valdimir Putin had said, "the new complex has the highest tactical and technical characteristics and is capable of overcoming all modern means of anti-missile defense. It has no analogs in the world and won't have for a long time to come."
"This truly unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of our armed forces, reliably ensure Russia's security from external threats and provide food for thought for those who, in the heat of frenzied aggressive rhetoric, try to threaten our country."
The Sarmat ICBM has been developed at the Makeyev State Rocket Center (part of Roscosmos) and is manufactured at the Krasmash enterprise. In experts’estimates, the RS-28 Sarmat is capable of delivering a MIRVed warhead weighing up to 10 tonnes to any point of the world both through the North and South Poles.
