An airline pilot flying over the South China Sea recently recorded a video footage of a missile launched from a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarine.
The actual date and location of the video’s shooting remain unknown. There is no official word from China regarding the incident.
The terrifying video going viral on the internet shows the passenger aircraft avoiding being hit by the missile. It was flying over the sea when Air Traffic Control (ATC) issued a frantic call, “Turn left 90 degrees immediately!”
The missile can be seen emerging from the sea’s surface and soaring to a high altitude at the front of the aircraft. The footage was shared on Twitter by John Carter (@jchovernut), a pilot for Allegiant Air and a veteran of the U.S. Navy’s submarine community, on May 25.
“A fellow Airline Pilot friend just sent me this from one of his colleagues at a foreign airline. They were over the South China Sea & were issued a last-minute hectic call from ATC: ‘turn left 90 degrees immediately!!’ Chinese sea launched ballistic missile from a PLAN Submarine!” the pilot said in the tweet.
He added, “To their bewilderment, they spotted a SLBM emerging from the sea below their previously intended flight path!! PLAN Missile Submarine launch with very little regard to Commercial Air Traffic in the area.”
The clip was purportedly recorded from a Boeing 777 operated by Cathay Pacific, the flag carrier of Hong Kong. The Airline however, stated that no such incident had taken place.
