Russian space agency Roscosmos has said that the country will withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) project after 2024, by which time the deployment of the national orbital station will begin.
"You know that we are working within the framework of international cooperation at the International Space Station. Of course, we will fulfill all our obligations to our partners, but the decision and leaving this station after 2024 have been made," Yury Borisov, head of Roscosmos, said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I think that by this time we will begin to form the Russian orbital station," he added.
In June, Dmitry Rogozin, former head of Roscosmos, had stated that the country would continue with the ISS project after 2024 only if U.S. sanctions against the Russian space industry are lifted.
NASA and Roscosmos recently signed an agreement to allow Russian cosmonauts to fly on U.S.-made spacecraft in exchange for American astronauts being able to ride on Russia's Soyuz.
