The procurement of BrahMos shore-based anti-ship missile system is on track with government of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. deciding to honour defense deal signed by the previous regime.
The Armed Forces of the Phiippines (AFP) had concluded with the Indo-Russian joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd, a $374.96-million deal in January 2022 for the supply of three batteries of the anti-ship missile system.
"The President has made sure that the AFP Modernization Program will continue. Some procurement have already been processed and we expect the delivery of big items that will modernize and make the AFP more capable of performing its mission," AFP spokesperson Col. Medel Aguilar said in a briefing to Philippines media on Thursday.
The greenlighted deals include contracts for the two missile corvettes to be acquired from South Korea, the BrahMos missile system from India, 32 more S-70i "Black Hawk" combat utility helicopters from Poland, and another six offshore patrol vessels also from South Korea, the Philippines News Agency reported.
The funding for these contracts is already assured by the government, the spokesperson said.
Marcos Jr. government cancels Russian helicopter deal
Earlier this month, the AFP cancelled an estimated $322.3 million deal to buy 16 Mi-17 helicopters from Russia citing “changes in priorities necessitated by global political developments.”
Efforts are being made to retrieve the $48.2 million down payment for the helicopters made in January, according to a statement by the Philippine National Defense Department spokesman Arsenio Andolong.
