Russia will develop a mobile version of its Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), its most powerful missile capable of delivering a nuclear strike anywhere on the planet.
The mobile version will make it difficult for anti-missile tracking systems of the United States to locate its position. Currently, the Yars ICBM is located in ground-based silos or carried by a road vehicle.
While not specifying what mobility meant for the upcoming Yars missile, Commander of the country’s Strategic Missile Forces Colonel General Sergey Karakayev told the Russian military’s Red Star newspaper that “new missile system will be capable of being promptly relocated and launched from any part of Russia.”
Development of this version of Yars will begin as early as 2023.
