Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the creation of a national project for the localization of drones.
“In the near future, the government should form an appropriate national project, the meaning of which is to provide opportunities for the widespread operation of drones, and, which is very important, a high level of localization of their production,” Putin said at a meeting of the Supervisory Board of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI), tvzvezda.ru reported.
Stating that drones are a catalyst for end-to-end technologies, Putin noted, " We are talking about navigation, communications, energy storage systems, new materials, artificial intelligence, engine building, microelectronics, and so on,"
Putin instructed the ASI to provide support to the regions in shaping the demand for drones and the mechanism for their use.
Though Russia has its own drone projects such as Orlan and Kronstadt, they are said to contain several foreign parts and are not manufactured in sufficiently large numbers.
Recently Ukraine and its Western supporters claimed that Russia has imported several hundred units of Iranian drones.
