Ukraine’s defense ministry said late Monday that a shipment of Russian Kalibr cruise missiles was destroyed while being transported by train in a Crimean town of Dzhankoi.
Sergei Askyonov, the Russian-installed head of the annexed Crimean peninsula, confirmed there was a strike and the region’s air defense system was activated. One person was injured and two buildings were damaged.
Britain said last year that Dzhankoi is one of Russia’s most important airfields in Crimea. It is also key road and rail junction that plays an important role in supplying Russia’s operations in southern Ukraine.
The destroyed Russian cruise missiles were reportedly meant to be employed by the Kremlin’s Black Sea fleet.
Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior ministry, shared footage on Twitter of what he claimed was from Dzhankoi’s railway station area. The footage depicts a single loud, scorching detonation followed by a column of smoke in the night sky.
