Russian forces are using commercially available drones made by Chinese company DJI for target acquisition in the Ukraine war.
The Russian MoD on Wednesday released video footage of mortar shells firing at Ukrainian positions using DJI drone console hooked up to a mobile phone for target detection and correcting the angle of fire. High speed and accuracy of target engagement is achieved by UAV adjusting the fire.
Last April, DJI said it will suspend export of its drones to Russia and Ukraine, amidst concerns of both sides using them in the war. The company said “it does not market or sell its products for military use.”
Russian defense ministry said the 82mm mortars are designed to engage manpower in exposed or concealed position, firepower, command and observation posts, enemy weapons and military hardware.
Before using the mortars, there is no need to prepare a firing position.
