Rostec Improves Efficiency of Helicopter Radars by 10%
Rostec improves efficiency of airborne radars equipped on civilian helicopters

ONPP Technology, a subsidiary of Rostec State Corporation, used modern composites based on quartz fabric to improve the quality of operation of airborne radars by more than 10%.

Airborne radars on civilian helicopters are needed for navigation and collision avoidance with ground and air objects. They are protected from external influences by fairings, which must have an aerodynamic shape, be durable and radio-transparent. The fairing created by ONPP Technology is made of a composite material based on quartz fabric. Due to this, it transmits the signal better, which, in turn, increases the efficiency of the radar of helicopters and other low-speed aircraft.

“The use of advanced materials in the creation of aviation equipment allows us to seriously improve its performance. While working on a radio-transparent radome for airborne radars, Technologiya specialists used the experience of creating similar systems for high-speed aircraft. As a result, it was possible to improve the quality of equipment operation by 10% and reliably protect it from external influences. Now we are working on the possibility of introducing this development into the production of new Russian helicopters,” said Andrey Silkin, General Director of ONPP Tekhnologiya.

The fairing was tested on a special stand with an active airborne radar. Tests have shown that it provides a transmission coefficient of electromagnetic waves of at least 90-92%, which is on average 10% higher than international standards require from such products. The development is the scientific foundation of the enterprise and is protected by a patent for inventions.
