The German government has sent ten Leopard 1A5 tanks and unknown number of Marder IFVs to Ukraine, providing the necessary shot in its arm, as part of its latest military aid package.
The package includes 20 MG3 machine guns for Leopard 2 tanks, Dachs armored engineer vehicles, 1,305 rounds of 155mm ammunition, 2,064 rounds of 155mm smoke ammunition, a bridge system and 12 trailers, four border protection vehicles, ten ground surveillance radars, 16 Zetros trucks, and 100,000 first aid kits.
Berlin last winter approved the transfer of 178 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine.
Oleksii Reznikov, Ukrainian Minister of Defense, shared in February that in spring, about 25 Leopard 1 tanks should arrive in Ukraine.
“There will be 20 to 25 of these tanks by the summer, about 80 by the end of the year, and over 100 Leopard 1 tanks by 2024. This is at least three battalions, along with the materials that will need to be purchased, spare parts, ammunition, and training,” Reznikov said after meeting his German counterpart Boris Pistorius.
