Ukraine’s army will get a further western push with the U.S. and Germany agreeing to provide it with Bradley and Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and a Patriot missile.
The news of Berlin and Washington pooling to provide the war-torn country with further armored vehicles came after a conversation between Chancellor Olaf Scholz and U.S. President Joe Biden.
“It comes very late but not too late,” said Strack-Zimmermann, a member of the Free Democrats — one of three parties in Scholz’s governing coalition — who has long pressed for the delivery of more types of weapons.
“We won’t let up,” she wrote on Twitter. “After the Marder comes the Leopard.”
A day earlier, France said it is sending AMX-10 RC light tanks, a wheeled system built around a powerful turret-mounted GIAT 105mm gun, to Ukraine.
The 50 Bradleys are reportedly part of Pentagon’s over $3 billion aid package announced Friday.
Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder also said the Bradleys are part of a larger shipment of equipment to Ukraine that will be announced later.
Bradley is a tracked armored combat vehicle that carries an auto cannon and a machine gun. They have both offensive and defensive capabilities and provide "a level of firepower and armor that will bring advantages on the battlefield as the Ukrainian military continues to defend their homeland," Ryder said during a news conference.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is also getting an additional Patriot battery. “In late December, the United States announced its donation of a Patriot air defense missile battery to Ukraine. Germany will join the United States in supplying an additional Patriot air defense battery to Ukraine,” a U.S.-Germany joint statement read.
