Indonesia Navy Receives Two Fani-class MCM Vessels

The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) received two Fani-class mine countermeasures vessels (MCMV) on August 14.

Based on the Frankenthal-class, the two Fani-class MCMVs were built by the German shipyard, Abeking & Rasmussen, and delivered from Bremerhaven Port to Surabaya using a heavy load carrier, Combi Dock I.

Fani-class vessels are about 61m long and can attain maximum speed of 18 knots.

According to TNI AL, the MCMVs are built by using non-magnetic steel and have their own degaussing system to reduce their magnetic signature, which is critical for mine-hunting missions. Additionally, to minimise acoustic signature, an electric propulsion system is installed on both vessels.

To support their role, both ships are also equipped with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (UAV), Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), underwater sonar equipment, and RHIBs. The vessels are fitted with Anschütz new SYNTACS Mine Countermeasure Suite and navigation system.

The MCMV will be put under the command of the 2nd Fleet’s Minesweeper Unit and also be used to sweep Indonesian waters from World War II-era naval mines.
