The U.S. Navy has placed an order with Sweden’s Saab for two SPN-50(V)1 shipboard air traffic radars.
The contract announced by the Pentagon today is valued at approximately $37 million. It includes the provision of two radars, one initial checkout kit, two onboard repair parts kits, and two depot spares kits, along with associated sustainment requirements for two Navy aircraft carriers.
The AN/SPN-50(V)1 radar system, which is one of the U.S. Navy versions of Saab’s Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam radar, will function as the primary air traffic control and surveillance radar for manned and unmanned aviation aboard the Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and large deck amphibious ships.
