South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), under the leadership of Director Eom Dong-hwan, has unveiled plans for the launch of the 2nd and 3rd military satellites of Project 425.

These Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites are scheduled to be deployed utilizing SpaceX's Falcon-9 launch vehicle from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in Florida later this year.

The 425 Project SAR satellites represent a significant leap in South Korea's military reconnaissance capabilities, boasting the ability to capture high-resolution images and collect vital information.

Additionally, these satellites are designed to complement the operations of the 425 Project No. 1 satellite (EO/IR satellite), launched in December of the previous year. The combined capabilities of these satellites aim to enhance detection of nuclear and missile provocations and monitor strategic targets in remote areas.

Satellite No. 2 of the 425 Project is currently undergoing development test evaluations in a ground-based space environment simulation test facility. The testing is expected to conclude in February, with subsequent activities including relocation to the launch site in March and a one-month launch preparation process leading to the scheduled launch in April. Satellite No. 3 has already completed assembly and is undergoing development testing and evaluation, with plans for launch in November following the completion of tests in September.

Both satellites in the 425 Project were developed by the Agency for Defense Development, with the involvement of domestic aerospace companies such as Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Hanwha Systems as prototype companies and partners. The development of an ultra-high-resolution SAR satellite marks a significant milestone for South Korea in securing cutting-edge space technology, with potential implications for strengthening domestic space development and contributing to the growth of the space industry.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration's Space Command and Communications Division, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National Investigation Agency, is actively involved in preparations for the satellite launches. A satellite launch preparation committee has been established to oversee critical aspects of the mission, including air transportation management and final testing at the launch site in the United States.

To address potential contingencies and launch delays, a satellite launch management team will operate at the U.S. launch site, ensuring a seamless transition from the successful launch of Satellite No. 1 to the upcoming launches of Satellites 2 and 3.
