In a move aimed at extending the service life of four MEKO 200 HN frigates currently in service with the Hellenic Navy, Thales and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems have forged a consortium for a comprehensive modernization program.

The mid-life upgrade seeks to enhance the operational capabilities of the aging fleet.

Following the Hellenic Navy's approach to the original equipment manufacturers, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Thales, the consortium agreement was formally signed on December 12, 2023, marking the beginning of the collaborative effort.

As per the consortium arrangement, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will oversee the modernization of the ship's platform. This includes supplying design documents and communication systems, with a subcontract to be awarded to Hagenuk Marinekommunikation, a subsidiary of ATLAS ELEKTRONIK. Thales, in turn, will be responsible for providing the combat system, utilizing the combat management system TACTICOS as its foundation.

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems plans to subcontract the ship platform modifications to a local Greek shipyard. The consortium is set to be the exclusive contact for the Hellenic Navy, with the anticipated order reception in 2024.

The MEKO 200 HN frigate, specified with dimensions of 117.5 meters in length, a beam of 14.8 meters, and a draft of 6.0 meters, relies on a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) system. The vessel is powered by General Electric LM2500 gas turbines and MTU 20V956 diesel engines, facilitating a speed of 31 knots with gas turbines and 21 knots with diesel only. The frigate has a range of 4100 nautical miles at 16 knots and accommodates a complement of 175 personnel.

In terms of armament, the MEKO 200 HN frigate is equipped with a Mk-48 Mod.2 vertical launching system, a Mk-45 Mod.2A 5"/54 gun, a Mk-141 missile launcher, Mk-32 triple torpedo tubes, and Mk-15 PHALANX Close-In Weapon Systems. The vessel integrates various radar and sensor systems, defensive measures, and features a flight deck and hangar designed for one helicopter, specifically the Sikorsky S-70B-6 Aegean Hawk.
