Fincantieri Begins Construction of First Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel for Italian Navy

The steel cutting ceremony for the first of four next-generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) to be built by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy took place today at the Riva Trigoso shipyard in Genoa.

This event marks the beginning of construction for the OPV program, which aims to modernize and renew the Italian Navy’s fleet.

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, a joint venture between Fincantieri, holding a 51% stake, and Leonardo, with 49% is responsible for the contract to build the vessels.

The OPV program, which has an estimated value of €1.2 billion for the first four ships, includes an option for two additional vessels. The first OPV is expected to be delivered by 2027, and the program also covers logistical support for the vessels.

The new OPVs, measuring approximately 95 meters in length with a displacement of 2,400 tons, are designed to accommodate a crew of 97. These vessels will be equipped with advanced technological solutions for improved automation and maneuverability, enabling operations in a variety of tactical environments and weather conditions. Their primary missions will include maritime patrol, surveillance, merchant traffic control, protection of lines of communication, and safeguarding Italy’s exclusive economic zone. The OPVs are also equipped for environmental protection missions, such as responding to marine pollution incidents.

One of the features of the new vessels is the integrated naval cockpit, developed by Fincantieri NexTech and Leonardo. This system, also in use on the Italian Navy's Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessels (PPAs), allows two operators—pilot and co-pilot—to control engines, rudders, platform systems, and some combat functions, improving operational efficiency.
