South Africa Evaluates Embraer's C-390 Millennium Airlifter

Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer announced on September 25 that South Africa has evaluated its C-390 Millennium transport aircraft.

The announcement coincided with the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition, held at Waterkloof Air Force Base from September 18-22.

According to the company’s press release, the C-390 Millennium was demonstrated to South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister of Defence Angie Motshekga. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) had the opportunity to assess the capabilities of the aircraft as part of its ongoing process to renew its aging transport fleet.

A possible agreement with South Africa would mark Embraer's first sale of the C-390 to an African nation.

Embraer noted the aircraft's ability to transport up to 26 tons of cargo, perform various missions in demanding conditions, and carry out tactical operations such as troop and equipment transport, medical evacuation, and disaster relief.

The C-390 Millennium, already in service with Brazil and selected by countries such as Portugal, Hungary, and the Netherlands, has garnered interest from the SANDF as part of its search for a new strategic airlift capability. The aircraft is equipped with modern avionics and mission software, designed to enhance operational efficiency across a range of missions.

The South African Air Force currently operates six Lockheed Martin C-130 aircraft. Originally, the fleet consisted of nine, but two were lost in accidents, and another was dismantled for spare parts.
