The Dutch Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the acquisition of nine Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft at the ongoing Farnborough Airshow in the U.K.
This is part of the 'Replacement of Tactical Airlift Capacity' project, in collaboration with Austria. The Royal Netherlands Air Force will receive five aircraft, while the Austrian Air Force will acquire four.
This joint purchase aims to enhance the capability to deploy and evacuate equipment and personnel globally under challenging conditions. The C-390 aircraft will provide increased operational flexibility and responsiveness, supporting a range of logistical, humanitarian, and medical missions.
The collaboration is expected to foster synergies in training, logistics, and platform development, benefiting current and future NATO operators of the C-390. The aircraft is designed for interoperability and connectivity in networked environments.
The C-390 can carry 26 tons, fly at 470 knots, and operate on various runways, performing missions such as cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, and firefighting. The KC-390 variant can also serve as a refueling tanker.
