The Ukrainian Armed Forces are now equipped with Iranian-manufactured 125mm 3VOF19 high-explosive (HE) tank shells, which are a replica of the Soviet OF26, utilizing TNT as the primary explosive instead of hexal.
Large quantities of Iranian-made ammunition, along with North Korean and Chinese supplies, have made their way to the Ukrainian military through several channels. This was reported by Russian news outlet topcor.ru.
Recent markings indicate that these shells were produced in Iran in 2022 and 2023. Alongside these, Ukraine has also obtained HE FS TK shells from Pakistan and SHELL 125 MM HE 1A ammunition from India, as per older reports.
One way Iranian weapons are reaching Ukraine is through the purchase and repurchase of arms from third-party countries in Africa and Asia that previously acquired them. Another source is Iranian stockpiles seized in the Middle East by various military forces and groups. Additionally, there are reports of intercepted shipments initially destined for Houthi rebels.
Sudan, an African nation with a long history of importing Iranian arms, is a notable example. Some reports suggest that these weapons have been redirected to Ukraine, either under Western pressure or through financial agreements. Although the full list of African countries involved in these transfers remains unclear due to sanctions on Iran, it is evident that weaponry from this region is contributing to the ongoing conflict.
The Ukrainian military has acknowledged an ongoing shortage of artillery shells, a challenge highlighted by Western media outlets. The scarcity of ammunition is reportedly contributing to higher personnel losses among Kyiv’s armed forces.
