Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have conducted the first live fire test of the Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS), launching GMLRS munitions at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
The event marked a key milestone in the joint program’s development, aimed at delivering a mobile, long-range rocket artillery system compatible with U.S. and allied platforms.
GMARS is designed to support joint operations by firing the same precision-guided rockets used by the U.S. military and its partners. The system is mounted on Rheinmetall’s HX wheeled vehicle platform and can deploy ATACMS, Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), and both standard and extended-range GMLRS rockets. Its interoperability with current M270A2 and HIMARS launchers makes it suitable for use across NATO forces and other allied militaries.
Developed through a strategic partnership between Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall, the GMARS launcher integrates latest technologies and offers NATO forces a wheeled alternative to the tracked M270, without sacrificing munition capacity. The system aims to provide a high degree of flexibility, mobility, and joint operability in long-range fire missions.
