The French Navy finalized an agreement with Exail and Thales for the acquisition of eight new-generation autonomous underwater drones, or AUV NGs, to bolster its anti-mine warfare system.
The contract, signed in the presence of Jean-Louis Thériot, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, includes an option for eight additional units.
The underwater drones are based on a modified design of Exail's A18-M model and will be equipped with Thales' high-resolution SAMDIS 600 multi-view sonar. Integrated with the French Navy's SLAM-F anti-mine warfare system, these AUV NGs will enhance underwater detection, autonomy, and classification of marine mines, supporting safe navigation around French ports and operational areas.
The first AUV NG delivery is scheduled for the first half of 2028, with all eight units expected by mid-2030. Developed through a collaborative effort that began in 2023 among Thales, Exail, the French Navy, and the French Armament Agency (DGA), these drones are designed to be compact and secure, incorporating technology for mine clearance.
Each AUV NG is equipped with a SAMDIS 600 sonar system and is compatible with the software suite from Thales’ Maritime Mine Countermeasures (MMCM) program. With specifications that include a diving depth of 300 meters, a 5-meter length, and a 10-hour mission autonomy, the drones will serve as essential tools for France's evolving mine warfare fleet. The agreement also outlines a second contract phase for in-service support and maintenance.
The SLAM-F program aims to replace traditional mine warfare methods with drone-based solutions, enhancing the safety and operational range of French Navy personnel by enabling mine-clearing operations at a distance from hazardous zones.
