The Royal Netherlands Navy's Combat Support Ship (CSS), the future Zr.Ms. Den Helder, has begun its sea trials, departing from Damen Shipyards in Galaţi, Romania, on November 16.
During this journey, the ship will traverse the Danube River, the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, with the initial sailing tests conducted in NATO-partner waters.
Upon completing the trials, the vessel will head to the Netherlands for outfitting at Damen facilities in Vlissingen and Den Helder, where it will receive sensors and weapon systems. This step will prepare the CSS to enhance the Royal Netherlands Navy’s operational capacity.
The Zr.Ms. Den Helder will provide at-sea replenishment, supplying fuel, spare parts, and ammunition to other naval vessels, ensuring sustained operations. This capability supports the Netherlands' defense priorities and strengthens NATO’s collective security efforts.
The ship's construction reflects the Dutch government’s strategic focus on maintaining maritime defense capabilities. While initial builds occur in Romania due to cost efficiency and workforce availability, the Netherlands is exploring ways to expand domestic naval production under the Sector Agenda Maritime Manufacturing Industry.
