Norwegian NASAMS air defense systems and F-35 fighters have been deployed in Rzeszów, Poland, to protect a logistics hub central to international military support for Ukraine.
This deployment was confirmed by the Norwegian Ministry of Defense.
The mission, led by NATO, is expected to continue until Easter. Alongside the NASAMS systems and F-35s, Norway has reportedly sent 100 troops to oversee the safe transport of military equipment heading to Ukraine.
Lieutenant Colonel Erlend Hammervik-Elvenes, commander of the Norwegian contingent, stated, "We are here to protect the critical infrastructure that is key to the international support provided to Ukraine."
The Rzeszów-Jasionka airport, located less than 100 kilometers from Ukraine's border, serves as a key transit point for up to 90% of Western military cargo destined for the front lines. It is currently protected by American Patriot air defense systems, with additional reinforcements planned.
Germany is set to deploy Patriot air defense missile systems in Poland in January 2025, further strengthening the defense of the Rzeszów region.
The Norwegian government announced its decision to send NASAMS and F-35 jets in early December. The systems arrived after a temporary setback when the ship Finlandia Seaways, initially carrying the equipment, ran aground in Norway. A replacement ship completed the delivery.
