China unveiled its Type 076 amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, featuring electromagnetic catapult and arresting systems for deploying manned, unmanned aircraft, and helicopters.

The Sichuan, named after the southwest Chinese province, is the latest addition to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s fleet. The ship, launched in Shanghai on Friday, has a displacement exceeding 40,000 tons and features a full longitudinal flight deck and a double-island superstructure.

According to the PLA’s official media, the Type 076 combines the functionality of an amphibious assault ship with features typically found on aircraft carriers. Its electromagnetic catapult technology enables it to launch fixed-wing aircraft, including J-15 fighter jets, more efficiently than traditional systems. The ship is also capable of carrying an amphibious combat battalion for rapid landing operations.

Chinese military expert Zhang Junshe explained to semi-official Global Times that this technology enhances the vessel's air superiority and land assault capabilities, while its large displacement allows for extended range and greater firepower. Another analyst, Song Zhongping, noted that the Type 076 effectively bridges the gap between amphibious ships and light aircraft carriers, incorporating elements from destroyers, frigates, and China’s Fujian aircraft carrier.

The Type 076 is part of China’s efforts to enhance its far seas combat capabilities, building on the three Type 075 amphibious assault ships—Hainan, Guangxi, and Anhui—commissioned between 2021 and 2024. This new vessel is expected to join aircraft carrier groups, supporting multidimensional operations such as horizontal landing and airborne missions.
