Anadolu Shipyard has launched the TCG İzmir frigate, designated F-516, marking the second ship in the İstif class frigate series and the sixth vessel under Turkey’s MİLGEM (National Ship) project.
With a length of 113.2 meters and a width of 14.4 meters, the frigate is a twin to the TCG İstanbul and will be integrated into the Turkish Navy’s inventory upon the completion of outfitting activities.
The İstif class frigates are designed as multi-role combat platforms capable of conducting a wide range of operations, including anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, air defense, reconnaissance, surveillance, and early warning missions. Equipped with sensors and weapon systems, the frigates are optimized for air defense warfare while maintaining capabilities across other warfare domains.
Turkey’s I-class frigate program includes a total of eight ships. As these new frigates are commissioned, older vessels in the fleet will be gradually decommissioned or repurposed for testing and training roles.
In addition to the I-class frigates, Turkey is currently building a range of naval platforms, including five Reis class submarines, six offshore patrol ships, eight modern landing craft, a new national submarine, a modern mine-hunting ship, and a fast attack boat. Construction activities for 31 warships are ongoing at domestic shipyards.
