The Philippine Navy (PN) has upgraded its three Gregorio Del Pilar-class offshore patrol vessels with sonar systems to enhance submarine detection capabilities.

Captain John Percie Alcos, PN spokesperson, was quoted as saying by the Philippine News Agency that nearly all Offshore Combat Force vessels within the Philippine Fleet are now equipped with ASW technology. These enhancements aim to support surface action groups—naval task forces comprised of multiple vessels tasked with surface warfare missions—designed to secure the Philippines' maritime territories.

ASW capabilities enable the detection, tracking, and neutralization of hostile submarines operating in the country’s waters. Key assets contributing to this capability include the guided-missile frigates BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) and BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), equipped with sonars and weapon systems designed to counter submarine threats.

Supporting these frigates are two AW-159 "Wildcat" ASW helicopters, featuring dipping sonars and anti-submarine torpedoes, providing additional operational flexibility.

The BRP Conrado Yap (PS-30), a former Pohang-class corvette donated by South Korea in 2019, also contributes to ASW operations with its sensors and weaponry.

The Philippines plans to significantly expand its ASW capabilities over the next two years. Two guided-missile corvettes and six offshore patrol vessels currently under construction in South Korea are expected to join the fleet, further enhancing the PN's ability to secure its maritime territory.
