Gazans who survived Israel’s genocidal assault on their enclave have reject a plan by U.S. President Donald Trump to deport and resettle them in Egypt and Jordan.
Trump said Saturday that in a telephone conversation with Jordan's King Abdullah II he raised the issue of resettling over 1 million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to the kingdom.
"I told him, 'I wish you would accept more, because I look at the Gaza Strip right now, and it's chaos, it's chaos,'" CNN quotes Trump as saying to reporters on board the presidential plane.
According to UN estimates, there are already 2.39 million registered Palestinian refugees in Jordan.
The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine issued a statement strongly condemning Trump’s remarks, describing them as "aggressive and fascist," and aligning with the most extreme agenda of the Israeli far-right.
Trump noted that, in addition to Jordan, Egypt could also accept Palestinians. The president continued that he wants to discuss this issue with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Sunday. Trump noted that this could involve both temporary and long-term residence of Palestinians in a new location, and that such an initiative could affect 1.5 million people.
Both Abdullah II and al-Sisi have previously spoken out against the idea of sending more Palestinian refugees to their countries.
Trump’s real estate development plans for Gaza?
Gaza is currently unlivable with over 60% of buildings and 92% of the housing stock destroyed or damaged in Israeli bombardment. Some 10,000 bodies lie under the rubble, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Some 90% of residents have been displaced, according to the U.N. There is no electricity or water which was cut off by Israel after the October 7 2023 attack by Hamas.
Earlier this week, Trump suggested that he could play a role in the restoration of the Gaza Strip, noting "its exceptional location, on the sea." Before that, in February 2024, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner spoke about Gaza's valuable potential for construction and suggested that Israel should resettle Palestinians from the enclave and restore order there.
Palestinian factions on Sunday strongly condemned statements made by US President Donald Trump concerning the deportation of Gaza's residents from their homeland.
Palestinians urge Jordan, Egypt to reject Trump’s plan
The Islamic Jihad organization of Palestine categorized Trump’s remarks as "an extension of a longstanding policy aimed at erasing the existence, undermining the will, and denying the rights of the Palestinian people," emphasizing that such remarks "encourage the perpetuation of war crimes and crimes against humanity by forcing our people to abandon their land."
The Islamic Jihad statement urged nations, particularly the Egyptian and Jordanian governments, to "reject Trump's plan," affirming that "our people, through their resilience and resistance, will thwart this plan just as they have overcome many others before."
