Turkey which has sought to procure 40 new -built Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets is waiting for a price offer from the U.K., which is coordinating its international sales and its manufacturer, the Eurofighter Consortium.
In a statement to the Turkish media, the Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday that “Efforts to procure 40 Eurofighter Typhoon Aircraft to meet the operational needs of our Air Force are continuing.”
“We want to purchase 40 aircraft in different configurations. These combinations may change, there is nothing definite at the moment,” the ministry statement said.
The ministry further said that the Requirement Definition Document prepared as a result of the discussions with the supplier was sent to the UK Ministry of Defense and the relevant company (Eurofighter Consortium). “Our request is that the first aircraft to be purchased are new production. But how this will happen will be determined by the offer that will come to us.”
Comparable to the Dassault Rafale and considered superior to the F-16 Block 70/72, the Eurofighter Typhoon is a multi-role 4.5 generation fighter aircraft designed for air superiority and operations against land and sea targets.
Developed through joint efforts by the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, this aircraft has had a mixed bag of international sales success.
Eurofighter Typhoon, which can reach a speed of 2,450 km/h, is considered one of the fastest 4.5 generation fighter jets in the world. Turkey can arm the Typhoon with a variety of locally made missiles and bombs.
Ankara zeroed in on the Eurofighter Typhoon after its efforts to the buy the F-35 were crushed following its purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense systems.
