The Bundeswehr has awarded Rheinmetall a contract to deliver advanced training simulators for the German Navy.
The project, known as the Distributed Naval Training Architecture (Verteilte Trainingsarchitektur der Marine, or VTAM), is valued in the mid-double-digit million euro range.
The contract was signed in December 2024, with the project launching in January 2025 and set to run for four years.
VTAM is a networked, simulation-based operational training solution for the German Navy.
Rheinmetall Electronic Solutions GmbH will supply and deploy hardware and software modules at six German naval bases.
This system, the first of its kind in the German Navy, simulates the interaction between the external and internal combat systems of warships, including weapons deployment and damage control. It will offer a broad range of future training options, enabling crews of vessels, boats, and aviation units to train together in virtual environments.
VTAM integrates existing and future simulation systems with onshore facilities, enabling joint exercises and connecting corvettes and frigates at Rostock-Warnemünde and Wilhelmshaven for virtual training. It also uses radio and tactical data links for communication and situational awareness during exercises.
This solution builds on Rheinmetall’s Naval Mission Training Center, delivered in 2023.
Additionally, in 2022, Rheinmetall was selected to supply eight MLG27-4.0 defense systems for the F126 frigates being built by Damen Naval for the German Navy.
