The Netherlands will extend its deployment of two unarmed MQ-9 Reaper drones in Romania until March 31, 2026, to support NATO's air shielding operations along the alliance's eastern flank.
The drones will gather intelligence to monitor the border of the NATO treaty area. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans informed the House of Representatives about the extension. A third MQ-9 Reaper will return to the Netherlands to focus on national activities.
The deployment involves about 120 personnel. Around 35 soldiers maintain and guard the aircraft at Campia Turzii Air Base in Romania, while the rest operate from Leeuwarden Air Base in the Netherlands, handling mission planning and intelligence analysis.
The MQ-9 Reapers use sensors to collect data and provide a comprehensive situational picture. Although the operation directly supports NATO, it remains under Dutch national responsibility, including the handling of intelligence.
NATO communicates its intelligence requirements to the Netherlands, which then decides how to meet those needs.
