Indonesia is reportedly interested in acquiring the retired Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi and up to 30 AV-8B Harrier jets as part of its naval modernization efforts.
According to Janes, the Indonesian Navy’s interest aligns with its "Minimum Essential Force" (MEF) strategy, which emphasizes acquiring helicopter-capable ships, frigates, and missile patrol boats.
Neither the Italian nor Indonesian military has commented on the potential sale.
The Italian Navy decommissioned Garibaldi in October 2023 after nearly 40 years in service. The 14,000-ton carrier features a ski-jump deck capable of operating 16 AV-8B attack aircraft or 18 helicopters. If acquired, it could enhance Indonesia’s combat capability and support humanitarian and disaster relief operations.
Indonesia has been expanding its naval forces amid rising regional tensions. Alongside the possible Garibaldi acquisition, the navy recently procured the Italian-built Tavon Direvel-class multi-purpose patrol ship, expected to be Indonesia’s largest warship when commissioned later this year.
In March 2024, Fincantieri announced a $1.23 billion contract with Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense for two Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura patrol ships. Indonesia has also acquired KCR missile boats from Turkey and plans to procure additional patrol ships from Japan.
