Ukraine will receive its first Saab-340 AEW&C aircraft, which will be integrated with F-16s via the Link-16 tactical network, allowing the detection of Russian Su-35 and Su-30SM1 fighters up to 250 km inside Russian airspace.
The Swedish-supplied Saab-340 AEW&C (ASC-890) aircraft will be stationed over central Ukraine, providing radar coverage over Russian airspace, as per Russian Arms Telegram channel. The PS-890 Erieye radar on board allows Ukrainian operators to track high- and medium-altitude aircraft, including Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers preparing for missile or bomb strikes. The integration of this airborne early warning system with Ukraine’s incoming F-16AM fighters enhances their ability to engage targets with AIM-120D long-range missiles.
Russian forces face an increased risk from this networked air defense setup, as it enables "ambush" tactics against Su-34 bombers. To counter this, Russia is expected to maintain constant air patrols with A-50U AEW aircraft and Su-35S fighters armed with R-37M missiles, capable of engaging Ukrainian F-16s at 230 km.
While the Saab-340 AEW&C can detect low-altitude Russian cruise missiles like the Kh-59MK2 and Kh-69 at distances of up to 160 km, doing so near Russian airspace would place the aircraft within range of Russian S-300V4 air defense systems and R-37M missiles, posing a threat to their operations.
Sweden confirmed delivering the ASC 890 Long-Range Radar Detection Aircraft, with the timeline aligned to F-16 modifications, Delfi reported on March 21. Swedish officials stated there are no delays, and all actions follow the initial plan. Security reasons prevent disclosure of transfer details.
