The Nigerian Air Force has reportedly received at least four Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet aircraft that previously served in the French Air Force.

The delivery is part of a contract with the French defense company SOFEMA, aimed at repairing and modernizing Nigeria’s Alpha Jet fleet.

According to unconfirmed reports, the agreement was signed in December 2024. Under the deal, six Alpha Jets will be restored to operational status, while the remaining aircraft will be used for spare parts. France’s transition to the Pilatus PC-21 for training purposes has facilitated the rapid transfer, as surplus Alpha Jets were already prepared for shipment at the time of signing.

The Alpha Jet has been a key asset in the Nigerian Air Force since 1982, used for both pilot training and light strike missions against terrorist and insurgent groups. Over the years, Nigeria has undertaken multiple efforts to restore and acquire additional Alpha Jets, with a fleet of 11 aircraft reported operational in 2023.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s air operations remain under scrutiny following an airstrike in late December 2024 that mistakenly targeted civilians in Sokoto State. Governor Ahmed Aliyu reported at least 10 fatalities and multiple injuries. The strike occurred during military operations against the Lakurawa rebel group, which has been active in northwestern Nigeria. Armed groups in the region continue to pose a security challenge, prompting increased military action, including air support.
